The Sager orphans (sometimes referred to as Sager children) were the children of Naomi and Henry Sager. In April 1844 Henry Sager and his family took part in the great westward migration and started their journey along the Oregon Trail. During their journey both Naomi and Henry Sager lost their lives and left their seven children orphaned. Later adopted by Marcus and Narcissa Whitman, missionaries in what is now Washington, the children were orphaned a second time, when both their new parents were killed during the Whitman massacre in November 1847. Catherine (1835-1910), the eldest of the Sager girls, married Clark Pringle, a Methodist minister and bore him 8 children. They lived in Spokane, Washington. About 1860, ten years after her arrival in Oregon, she wrote a first-hand account of their journey across the plains and their life with the Whitmans. This account today is regarded as one of the most authentic accounts of the American westward migration. She hoped to earn enough money to set up an orphanage in the memory of Narcissa Whitman. She never found a publisher. Catherine died on August 10, 1910, at the age of seventy-five.

Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca (c. 1490/1507-c. 1557/1559) was an early Spanish explorer of the New World and is remembered as a proto-anthropological author. As treasurer, and hence one of the chief officers, of the Narvaez expedition, he and three others were the only survivors of the party of 300 men who landed near Tampa Bay, Florida on April 15, 1528. Over the course of eight years, various members of the expedition succumbed to disease, starvation, exposure, and the attacks of various Native American groups as they slowly made their way west, toward Mexico, where they knew there were other Spaniards. Others among them simply gave up the effort and "went native". For a few years, the survivors were enslaved by various Native American tribes of the upper Gulf coast. Only the final four-Cabeza de Vaca, Dorantes, Castillo, and a Moroccan Berber named Esteban (who was later called Estevanico)-ultimately escaped and eventually reached Mexico City. During his wanderings, passing from tribe to tribe, he developed sympathies for the indigenous population. He eventually became a trader, which allowed him freedom to travel among the tribes. He wrote about his experiences in a report for Charles V. It was later published in 1542, under the title La Relacion (The Report), later known as Naufragios, and is considered a classic of colonial literature.

Iolo Morganwg was the bardic name of Edward Williams (1747-1826), an influential antiquarian, poet, collector and literary forger. The name is Welsh for "Iolo of Glamorgan". He first came to public notice by revealing some previously undiscovered poetry by Dafydd ap Gwilym, generally considered to be the greatest Welsh poet, in 1789. He moved to London, where he become a significant figure in the Welsh community and he held the first Gorsedd, Gorsedd Beirdd Ynys Prydain, at a ceremony in 1792 at Primrose Hill, London. His philosophy represented a fusion of Christian and Arthurian influences, a proto-romanticism comparable to that of William Blake and the Scottish poet and forger James MacPherson, the revived antiquarian enthusiasm for all things "Celtic", and such elements of bardic heritage as had genuinely survived among Welshlanguage poets. He was the author of the Druid's Prayer or Gorsedd prayer (Gweddi'r Derwydd or Gweddi'r Orsedd in Welsh), which is still a staple of the ritual of both gorseddau and Neo-Druidism. Among his writings was Cyfrinach Beirdd Ynys Prydain, or The Mystery of the Bards of the Isle of Britain (1829), a treatise on Welsh metrics.

John Dee (1527-1608) was a noted English mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, geographer, occultist, and consultant to Queen Elizabeth I. He also devoted much of his life to alchemy, divination, and Hermetic philosophy. Dee straddled the worlds of science and magic just as they were becoming distinguishable. One of the most learned men of his time, he had lectured at the University of Paris when still in his early twenties. John was an ardent promoter of mathematics, a respected astronomer and a leading expert in navigation, having trained many of those who would conduct England's voyages of discovery (he coined the term "British Empire"). Dee was an intensely pious Christian, but his Christianity was deeply influenced by the Hermetic and Platonic-Pythagorean doctrines that were pervasive in the Renaissance. He believed that mathematics (which he understood mystically) was central to the progress of human learning. His personal library at Mortlake was the largest in the country, and was considered one of the finest in Europe, perhaps second only to that of de Thou. His works include: Navigationis Ad Cathayam... Delineato Hydrographica (1580), De Trigono (1595) and others.

Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (1876-1938), better known by her pen name, Zitkala-Sa, was a Native American writer, editor, musician, teacher and political activist. She was born and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota by her mother. Zitkala-Sa lived a traditional lifestyle until the age of eight when she left her reservation to attend Whites Manual Labor Institute, a Quaker mission school in Indiana. She went on to study for a time at Earlham College in Indiana and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. A considerable talent, Bonnin co-composed the first American Indian grand opera, The Sun Dance in 1913. After working as a teacher at Carlisle Indian Industrial School, she began publishing short stories and autobiographical vignettes. Her autobiographical writings were serialized in Atlantic Monthly and, later, published in a collection called American Indian Stories in 1921. Her first book, Old Indian Legends (1901), is a collection of folktales that she gathered during her visits home to the Yankton Reservation. Her other works include Stories of Iktomi and Other Legends of the Dakotas (1901) and Oklahoma's Poor Rich Indians (1924).

Elizabeth Custer, nèe Bacon (1842-1933) was the wife of General George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876). After his death, she became an outspoken advocate for her husband's legacy. In 1876, Lieutenant Colonel Custer campaigned against the Sioux. From Fort Abraham Lincoln in what is now North Dakota, he led the Seventh Cavalry in pursuit of Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and the Sioux and Northern Cheyenne who refused to be confined to the reservation system. After his column was wiped out at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, many in the press, Army, and government criticized Custer for blundering into a massacre. President Ulysses S. Grant publicly blamed him for the disaster. Fearing that her husband was to be made a scapegoat by history, Elizabeth Custer launched a one woman campaign to rehabilitate her husband's image. She began writing articles and making speaking engagements praising the glory of her martyred husband. Her three books, "Boots and Saddles"; or, Life in Dakota With General Custer (1885), Following the Guidon (1890) and Tenting on the Plains (1893) were brilliant pieces of propaganda aimed at glorifying her dead husband's memory.

Colonel Prentiss Ingraham (1843-1904) was a prolific American author of dime fiction. The author of The Masked Spy (1872) and over 20 Buffalo Bill titles, Ingraham plausibly claimed in 1900 to have written over 600 novels. As well as writing under his own name, he published under pseudonyms including Dr. Noel Dunbar, Dangerfield Burr, Major Henry B. Stoddard, Colonel Leon Lafitte, Frank Powell, Harry Dennies Perry, Midshipman Tom W. Hall, and Lieut. Preston Graham. He died of Bright's disease. Other works include: The Beautiful Rivals (1884), Adrian the Pilot (1885), Buck Taylor: King of the Cowboys (1887), Darkie Dan (1888), Cadet Carey of West Point (1890), Land of Legendary Lore (1898), The Young Mountaineer (1898) and The Girl Rough Riders (1903).

This book will show you how to modernize your page-based, include-oriented PHP application by extracting and replacing its legacy artifacts. We will use a step-by-step approach, moving slowly and methodically, to improve your application from the ground up. Each completed step in the process will keep your codebase fully operational with higher quality. Please note that this book is about modernizing in terms of practice and technique, and not in terms of tools. We are not going to discuss the latest, hottest frameworks or libraries. Most of the very limited code we do add to your application is specific to this book. When we are done, you will be able to breeze through your code like the wind. Your code will be fully modernized: autoloaded, dependency-injected, unit-tested, layer-separated, and front-controlled.

This book provides a handbook of algorithmic recipes from the fields of Metaheuristics, Biologically Inspired Computation and Computational Intelligence that have been described in a complete, consistent, and centralized manner. These standardized descriptions were carefully designed to be accessible, usable, and understandable. Most of the algorithms described in this book were originally inspired by biological and natural systems, such as the adaptive capabilities of genetic evolution and the acquired immune system, and the foraging behaviors of birds, bees, ants and bacteria. An encyclopedic algorithm reference, this book is intended for research scientists, engineers, students, and interested amateurs. Each algorithm description provides a working code example in the Ruby Programming Language.
